« Open city / closed city, the manufactory of the contemporary city » from the Rendez-vous Chine at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine de Paris will take place on March 15 2022 at 6:30 p.m.

“Wuhan, Ville close”, Fang Fang’s book on the lockdown, touches upon ancient images of fortified cities, while in China “open cities” are associated with openness to the West and more broadly with modernity. But what about the use of walls, of urban limits and the fact that “the enclosures do not necessarily delimit the whole city” (M. Roncayolo, 1990)? The mass phenomenon of urbanization and that of heritagization which followed raise these questions of generic and diffuse urbanism, of local and regional identity. The Pingyao region, the defensive forts of the coastal cities of Fujian are contemporary examples.
Hosted jointly by the Observatoire de l’architecture de la Chine contemporaine and the Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO), the Centre Chine, Corée, Japon, et l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (CNRS-UMR 8173), the Rendez-vous Chine allow to share and discuss the point of views from urban planners, architects, historians, researchers and sociologists.
