[Projects] Nancy’s new Cité Administrative
[Project] Architecturestudio delivers the first phase of Nancy’s new Cité Administrative.
Architecturestudio’s proposal for the renovation of Nancy’s Cité Administrative, the result of a competition won in December 2021, is part of a national program to renovate the country’s administrative buildings. The former Thiry military barracks, built by architect Richard Mique in 1769 in Nancy’s Royal Sainte-Catherine district, comprises three buildings framing a parade ground. The project involves the conversion of two of these buildings into the Cité Administrative, to house government services, and the redevelopment of the parade ground.
These military buildings, unoccupied for 40 years and partially renovated until the 1980s, are now undergoing a major transformation:
– modification of the interior layout,
– energy renovation,
– replacement of floors and reinforcement of foundations to provide a suitable working environment.
The agency, in association with Réciprocité, has initiated a re-use initiative. As part of this process, a diagnosis was carried out to identify reusable floor coverings, false ceiling tiles, switches, radiators and sanitary equipment.
The double-glazed frames of the exterior joinery no longer meet today’s thermal insulation criteria, and have been reused as interior joinery, incorporated into the separating partitions. This makes it possible to install large bay windows and provide abundant natural lighting in the central “active strip”.
The Place d’Armes will be completely renovated to create a “circular” layout: the 340 parking spaces currently required will be laid out on stabilized soil around a central green square laid out as a rain garden. The reduction in parking requirements will enable the central green space to be enlarged without heavy road demolition.
