Xie Zhiliu & Chen Peiqiu Art Museum
Shanghai, China
In keeping with the techniques of traditional Chinese painting, Xie Zhiliu & Chen Peiqiu Art Museum draws its inspiration from traditional art, seeking to become an example at an architectural scale.
The Xie Zhiliu & Chen Peiqiu Art Museum is located on the shore of Dishui Lake, in Lingang New City of Pudong New Area, in the Southeast of Shanghai. The plot is surrounded by a rustic landscape at the corner of a canal and is covered by lush vegetation, creating an ideal environment for the design of a public art museum.
Traditional painting, as practiced by the Chinese couple Xie Zhiliu and Chen Peiqiu, captures public imagination and arouses Chinese cultural pride. Following the same logic, this art museum is becoming itself a genuine work of art. The center is planned to serve as a museum, hosting a wide variety of exhibitions and serving as crossroads of artistic exchanges. Its elegant lines trace simple outlines and carve the sky into delicate curves. The vivid colors emerging from the project blend a minimalist layout within a sublimated visual perspective. The museum
becomes a painting in which the imagination of the visitors is free to wander. The poetic language of the curves and arches defined by entrance halls and ceilings give amplitude to the interior spaces and release the gaze upwards.
A principle of traditional Chinese painting teaches that each layer of ink added to the initial painting stratifies into a structure of constantly blending thicknesses. Thus, each part of the project forms a layer superimposed on another. The masses have each their own specific role, yet work together as an efficient art system. The construction materials give substance to the richness of the natural environment admired by the painters and to the beauty of an exquisite site.
