Santiago Des3aDo is a design and decision- making software package for developing a sustainable city in Santiago, Chile. This international project intends to inject French know-how in the field of sustainable urban planning into the booming Chilean capital.

Santiago Des3aDo is an innovative decision-making tool that has been designed to transform Santiago into a sustainable city via 3D digital representation and simulation. It is intended to design and develop every facet of an urban area: mobility, sanitation, water, waste, energy and telecommunications. The simulator is a tool for promoting and showcasing solutions in urban planning, architecture, services, products and technologies derived from French expertise in sustainable cities. Chile boasts a significant economic dynamism that is synonymous with social transformation and environmental challenges. With seven million inhabitants, Greater Santiago has a very high urbanisation rate, and the city has to face many challenges in terms of its historical legacy, public spaces and mobility.

The project is the result of an agreement signed in March 2014 between the French government and the Municipality of Santiago. It has been funded to the tune of two million euros by the French state under the FASEP – Innovation Verte financing package. Santiago Des3aDo is a visual, interactive and unique tool that allows everyone to tackle the complex dimensions of the sustainable city. In particular, it is designed to enable the historic centre, Santiago Centro, to regain its attractiveness and offer citizens a better quality of life.
The project breaks down into two main delivery stages. First, an analysis of what already exists identifies the challenges and strategic orientations integrated into the software’s dashboard. The construction of an urban eco-design approach and the sustainability requirements are translated using data present on the ground. The second phase includes the urban proposals that enhance a planning scenario and the integration of innovative solutions with the simulator assessing the related performances. Furthermore, Santiago Des3aDo is an opportunity to gather together a large number of public and private policymakers around a shared vision to ensure the success of the capital’s urban development project.
