The ESTP/ESEO Metropolitan Campus
has leveraged the expansion of the Dijon university system to envision an innovative building in terms of energy and environmental efficiency (E3C1) and smart-building connectivity. The project brings together the two engineering schools around a stage-type atrium open to innovative teaching practices, in a single shared building that can accommodate third-party uses.

The Metropolitan Campus is a new starting point for the city of Dijon, in a region whose development strategy is driven by a policy of expansion of university and R&D facilities. The
“Metropolitan Campus” project addresses the initiative of the local urban planning authority to host the Special School for Public Works (ESTP) and the Graduate School of Engineering (ESEO) in Dijon in a cluster of interconnected and communicating buildings. According to the plan, this “smart building” university campus will further interact within the broader “smart city” context by providing large shared common areas and a showroom to “On Dijon”, the major digital project of the city.

The building accommodates two distinctive schools of engineering as well as shared spaces. The project’s digital and innovation showcase at city scale focuses on the creation of spaces promoting new teaching practices. The large amphitheatre at the heart of the project, accessible from both engineering schools, has been raised to overlook the Berthaut esplanade. To join the two schools, a vast central atrium, intended for cross-cutting curricula and shared by both ESEO and ESTP, the two participant engineering schools, was carved out in the built mass.
The building’s polymorphous exterior plays on different levels of transparency, providing a glimpse of the indoor activities and bustle, while offering generous views to the outdoors landscape. The building’s functional facilities are designed according to a rational and functional layout for standard programs and general-purpose premises. The column-beam structure confers modularity and enables reversible uses over time.
