Jussieu University campus – Est sector

The work carried out on the eastern sector brought to an end the overall restructuring of the campus that began in 2008, making it once more a reference point in the urban geography of eastern Paris. In this new perspective, Édouard Albert’s architecture has been showcased with its exceptional autonomy and urban homogeneity. The challenge of the renovation was to open up the campus that had originally been designed as a slab structure. The renovation of the patios emphasises the architectural qualities of the famous original grill, in particular the transparency of the slab. It also strengthens the greening of the courtyards and improves the natural lighting at Saint Bernard. The programme for the East area provides most of the laboratories in the superstructure. The large number of service ducts required for operating the wet laboratories are grouped together in the central portion to offer numerous possibilities for adapting the building and making it more flexible in the future. Patio 44-55 represents a special place to meet on the campus, allowing visual access onto the Jardin des Plantes. Protected by a light roof, it naturally becomes the main reception point giving access to Technologies Hall and the Great Amphitheater.
The openness to the city is strengthened by the creation of strong links with the district and the treatment of its surroundings, within the framework of global planning for the urban complex. The “hard” atmosphere of the campus has been softened by re-greening the site. A new, predominantly green, forecourt greets the public and serves as an interface with the city, offering unprecedented perspectives and full transparency on campus life.
