Conceptual Design of Humanity Comprehensive Building of Tsinghua University

Located in the heart of one of the most prestigious universities in the world, the new Humanities Building is the product of traditional architectural know-how and contemporary expression in a delicate fusion of history and modernity.

The Humanities Building of Tsinghua University is located in the very heart of one of the most prestigious university campuses in Beijing. It stands at the interface between the former campus and the new university centre developed alongside, at the intersection of the three main rivers that define the site’s natural features, in the immediate vicinity of a group of historical buildings.

The project involves the renovation and development of the existing Wenbei Building to meet the requirements and expectations of modern academic educational programmes. By combining traditional and modern building styles, the new humanities building brings into the limelight the ties between the past and the future. The two structural languages intertwine and converge in the same building, preserving the historical architectural heritage alongside a contemporary design. Red brick, the most widely used material in the historical buildings of Tsinghua University, is also showcased in the new Wenbei building, highlighted by the use of a modern expressive language in its glass curtain walls and wood and metal elements.

The renovation of the Humanities Building epitomises the interplay of history and modernity.
